School of Rock – Day 15 – Celebration and Reflection

SUMMARY

  • I thought this was an amazing class. It was extremely engaging and made me into a better person. School of rock is a class where you carve your own path based on your goals and what you want to do. It’s class where you can record songs, practice on guitars and keyboards, and mix songs using a music-making software called Soundtrap. It’s also a class where you can learn about being a better person, with videos about happiness, wellbeing, etc.

I enjoyed learning about tending to mental self, and making music along the way. I think everyone was really cool. I didn’t overcome anything, but I learned a lot of new things and I’m better person than I was 3 weeks ago.

THE COURSE’s ACTIVITY EVALUATION (OVERALL)

Content (The WHAT)

Rating: OK  – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5  – HIGHLY ENGAGED

Rating: 5

I was most interested with the outside videos and The song making.

Learning about happiness, a good work ethic, and just things about life. How to be a creative machine. To carve your own path. These 90 hours probably contains the most information that I have ever learned in my entire life.

Process (The HOW)

Rating: OK  – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5  – HIGHLY ENGAGED

Rating: 5

I liked how the course was based around us, not a system. I mean, I didn’t like the busy work, but I can deal with that. If I took the class again, I would not change a single thing.

School of Rock – Day 14 – Voice, Preparation, and Presentation

SUMMARY

I finished my song I miss Her, got feedback on 3 of my songs, and watched Rumble: the Indians who rocked the world.

LEADERSHIP ACTIVITY

(P.S, play my bonus songs first)

Bonus Songs:

  1. Previous Days (Hookpad Demo)

2. I miss her (SoundTrap Mixing)

Here are Mp3 Versions (Lower Quality, but they can be played on the blog)

  1. Stuck in The Rain:

2. The Coughing Man

3. Sunshine and Rainbows

Leadership Project (SMART Goal Evidence)

Comments:

  1. The Coughing Man:
  • Good song-writing, Maybe A little more rhyming
  • A bit of it could been skipped
    • Sunshine and Rainbows:
  • The voice’s volume was inconsistent
  • Piano (Very Repetitve)
  • Coda was nice
  • Rhyming a lot better, seemed a lot better
  • Piano could of been quiter
  • Instrumentals could of been quiet
  • Contrast between Verse and Chorus
  • I miss her:
  • Instrumentaion was good, but the voice kind of mumbled. Soft doesn’t mean quite.
  • Repetitive, Fade in, Fade out doesn’t sound natural
  • Didn’t Hit Pitches
  • Using “her” sounds very repetitive
  • The little blip got annoying

One important thing to know is that for these songs and composition, I would take the tracks and loop it. If I focus on the details of the compostion, I could make an amazing song.

  1. Put energy and emotions into the song
  2. Delaying instant gratification is better. Period.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

  • I learned about how to record good vocals. I was just trying to get good vocals for my songs, and I learned what not to do:
  • Recording Siting Down
  • Singing Loud close to the microphone
  • Singing really deep way to close to the microphone
  • Don’t sing into the microphone

I learned that I should instead:

  • Sing standing up
  • Sing with microphone ascended
  • Be a couple of inches away from the microphone
  • Sing into the room if you want a strong voice

SUMMARY

I mainly worked on my song Sunshine and Rainbows, and Practiced Hey Bulldog.

PRACTICE ROOM (GUITAR LESSONS)

CLASSROOM (THEORY & ANALYSIS)

The vocals, bass, and drums sounded great! Now I wanna go listen to the Boston Album.

I also watched Rick Beato’s video on the Beatles, dissecting their song “The End.”

Notes:

Hearing the recreation of the last 52 seconds of the song, Rick Beato credits the song as beginning from the intro with the piano part, not counting the entire 1 minute and half bridge that plays before it, which I though was interesting.

(If you listen to the song, you’ll see that it’s two minutes. However, in the Rick Beato video, he only starts to recreate the song after the 1:29 mark, and says that the whole song begins after that point, which is very interesting)

Link to ‘The End”; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12R4FzIhdoQ

Fun fact: While the song’s length is 2:21, the track actually ends at 2:05. This is presumably while The End is the final song of the Abbey Road Medley (A bunch of songs on the abbey road album that blend together to form one giant long song, starting with You never give me your money), ending the album, Her Majesty is the album’s true final song, so an extra 16 seconds of silence is added at the end of The End to give it a climatic ending, while letting Her Majesty serving as an encore for the Abbey Road Album.

LAB (THEORY PRACTICED)

OUTSIDE (CREATIVITY & THE BRAIN)

This video both reminded me of things I knew and taught me new ideas. That if you wait long enough, if you get to the end of thought, you’ll be able to connect to yourself. However, I don’t need to connect to myself cause I already know what my goals are, what I want. I know that what I want to do is focus on the arts. Work on songs, films. I want to live life, and the only way to live life is to live in the present.

You should admire the past as your mistakes and achievements make you who you are. But, you shouldn’t stay in the past, or else you won’t move forward. As for the future, it should be used as a tool, as a way to plan and look forward to present moments that are yet to come. But, if you live in the future, you’re living a fantasy.

STUDIO (SONGWRITING)

CONTROL ROOM (RECORDING & MIXING)

I focused on making the main melodies for my song Sunshine and Rainbows. I did that for about 3, 4, hours.

STAGE

We watched the Mototown documentary.

WHAT I LEARNED and PROBLEMS I SOLVED

  • I mainly spent today working on Chord Progressions and Melodies for my song Sunshine and Rainbows/ I also practiced Hey Bulldog on keyboard. Working on Sunshine and Rainbows has really brought out something in me, as there’s something that‘s so appealing about creating a flow with chord progressions, and making satisfying melodies, along with lyrics. School of Rock – Day 6 – Bass Basics

RESOURCES FOR THE CLASS

SUMMARY

I practiced Hey Bulldog and Martha. I learned about Bass lines, and made one for my song, along with recording vocals for my song.

PRACTICE ROOM

I mainly practiced Hey Bulldog and Martha My Dear.

CLASSROOM

How Bass Works (47 minutes)

Write notes of topics you want to remember.

  • The bass line is the foundation of a song
  • It is quite young, having only been around for about 4 centuries
  • A bass line is based around the tonic notes/roots of your chords
  • You can also others notes from a triad using Inversion
    • Bass lines use riffs, which are little musical ideas
    • Bass lines should be in a lower octave then all of your other instrument
    • In songs, you can use contrary motion, which is where when one note on an instrument goes up, a note on the bass line goes down, and vice versa

LAB

I loved making a Bassline for my song. While making the bassline, I realized how useful Hookpad actually is.

STUDIO

While I didn’t do the guitar thing, what I did compose was a bass-line for my song, and it sounds awesome. I realized that in order to make a catchy bass-line, all you need to do is to take the root notes of a motif or chord, mix up the rhythm, and add in a bunch of shorter notes, and you got a catchy bass line. You should also include jumps and steps in your bass line’s melody

CONTROL ROOM

Making the bass line went really well. I realized that I couldn’t export my bass line as a midi (due to me not having a subscription) so I just remade it in Soundtrap. When Pairing it with the other instruments, I made adjustments to the bass line in curtain parts.
